Together Is Now Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Partnership.

We present a test for partners in committed relationships who appreciate horror films: Sit down with your loved one and watch Together. The independent film success of 2025 just made its streaming debut via Hulu. On the surface, it might appear like conventional biological terror, but inside Together resides a deep meditation about our choices in loving one another.

A Directorial Debut Delving into The Nuances of Love

Together marks the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, partners that have been together for a decade. Having wed in reality in 2017, the two stars contribute a unique chemistry to their roles, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The narrative starts when Millie and Tim move from the metropolis to the rural area for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, of course, but that’s primarily where the conventions cease. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While trekking near their new home, a tempest descends, and the protagonists tumble into an hole in the earth. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a strange force starts to affect the couple. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.

The whole movie is a slow burn fright fest, blending elements of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes during something grotesque). Michael Shanks weaves these elements together expertly and wraps them up in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.

Nuanced Portrayals

A great deal of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray numerous complexities to the partnership at the film's core. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a emotional and physical gap. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his reluctance to pursue anything but his floundering music career inexorably rises.

Tim, on the other hand experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and removed from his support system. He dreads the notion of completely losing his personal autonomy in another person. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for getting around.

The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie avoids making either of his characters the obvious villain.

The couple confront the type of challenges that come with long-term unions a decade in. Fundamentally, they continue to care for each other. They still laugh together, offer support, and open up at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these fears of codependency and fully committing to a partner, the symbolism does not come across as clumsy or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama work together in a mutually beneficial way.

A Debated Finale

Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that single viewers have seen the movie as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. Conversely, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film ended up guiding them to make up.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own response could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your other half and state, “I’d do that for you”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can embark on at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform now.
