TikTok Grants Users Power to Limit AI-Generated Media in Their Feeds

The platform is rolling out a updated setting that permits them to cut down on the volume of AI-created videos appearing in their feeds. This initiative comes as the company announced that it currently hosts more than 1 thousand million AI videos.

Testing and Rollout

This change is being tested over the coming weeks before a global release. This development coincides with a rise in content created by AI, spurred by recent AI video creators.

AI Proliferation Online

Studies have shown that almost one in 10 of the quickest rising video streams on a competing service only show clips produced artificially. A large amount of this content is classified as mass-produced AI material, a label for inferior, mass-produced content that is often nonsensical or surreal.

“We know from our community that a lot of users like content made with AI tools, from AI artwork to educational videos, and we aim to give people the power to adjust the amount of that, depending on their own likes,” commented a platform representative.

Scale of AI Content

TikTok disclosed that there are presently 1.3bn videos on its app identified as artificially created. In total, over 100 million media items are added to the platform every day, making clips made by AI a limited portion of its complete catalog.

User Control Features

Viewers will be able to decrease or raise the level of AI-generated videos they view by opening the topic control setting in the platform and selecting the AI content topic. Additional categories that currently be adjusted under the filter encompass news, clothing, aesthetics, and movement.

Content Labeling and Policies

Its rules require content makers to identify “realistic” AI-made content, and it forbids malicious fake videos of well-known individuals or emergencies. Any believable AI-generated clip that is without a tag can be removed under its terms of service.

Additionally, the app will henceforth apply an AI-generated label to content made using its own AI tools, or flagged by an cross-platform project for identifying AI-generated material. This step is aimed to stop users from seeking to evade the labeling process.

Educational Initiatives

TikTok is furthermore establishing a two million dollar AI literacy fund for specialists and organizations to produce learning resources about using AI responsibly. This initiative will support educational bodies dedicated to training programming and robotics.

Content Safety Approach

The video-sharing app has supported its content review process, amid controversy over proposals to cut jobs for numerous review team members in the UK. The company is planning to cut hundreds of positions in its content moderation division in its British office, with trade unions and online safety experts expressing worry that humans are being replaced by AI moderation.

A senior executive clarified that people-led review would still have a role, but AI can safeguard staff by filtering out the most graphic content prior to it has to be seen by people. TikTok stated a 76% decrease in explicit and harmful content handled by human moderators over the last 12 months due to the use of its automated systems.

“We think that it’s essential to balance staff and AI to keep the platform safe,” the executive stated. “We’ll have staff as part of that process, but we also think it’s extremely critical to reduce exposure to unsafe media as swiftly, which is the area in which a significant AI assistance is proving valuable process content quickly.”
