19 of Medvedev's 21 titles have been achieved on hard courts

A comeback the Russian player won his first championship for 882 days with a win over Corentin Moutet in the Almaty Open championship match.

Medvedev, a ex- number one, has had a difficult season, winning just a single victory at the Grand Slams and experiencing a setback at the New York tournament.

His inconsistency on the ATP Tour - and difficulties with his serving in particular - resulted in him falling of the elite rankings and finally separating with long-time coach Gilles Cervara.

Presently training with Johansson and his other coach, the tennis star has steadily improved in the last few weeks - peaking in a tightly fought 7-5 4-6 6-3 triumph over opponent Corentin Moutet.

This represents the player's maiden trophy since the 2023 Rome Masters and first on a hard surface since March of 2023.

The win also signifies he has won 21 championships at twenty-one different competitions.

"This marks the first occasion I'm at a tournament with my two daughters simultaneously, so to get a championship is especially meaningful," stated world number 14 the champion.

"This victory is in dedication of my child her name, because the maiden victory I got when my first daughter Alisa was born was for her."

Medvedev, the 2021 US Open champion, had failed in his past six title deciders, including in that event earlier this year.

The player's counter-punching approach and recurring emotional displays on the playing surface had led some to doubt if his skill to perform at the elite level was concluded.

But the athlete has altered his approach in recent weeks, attempting to approach the net and perform assertively, reinforced by an enhanced serve.

The champion came back from a deficit in the initial set against the tricky Moutet, securing four of the last five points to gain the advantage.

Both players swapped service breaks in the second set before the challenger, attempting for his first tour championship, gained dominance to push for a decider.

The opponent defended four initial chances in a close final set before the champion broke to 15 to serve for the match.

Suitably, the winner clinched the title with a point at the front of the court, with the Frenchman unable to control a return after a lengthy match.
